How Does Solar Power Work?

Simply put, solar panels leverage something called the photovoltaic effect which converts the sun's energy into electricity that your household can use. But how does that actually happen?

Solar panels are made up of silicon photovoltaic (PV) cells (that's why solar power is sometimes called solar PV). When the sun's rays hit your solar panels, the PV cells absorb those rays and produce electricity through the photovoltaic effect. This effect forms an electric field in p-n junctions, allowing negatively and positively charged particles to move in opposite directions — creating an electric current.

This electric current produced takes the form of Direct Current (DC) electricity, which our household appliances and other electronics cannot use. That is why all solar power systems come with an inverter, which converts that DC electricity to the form your house can use: Alternating Current (AC) electricity.

After being converted to AC, the electricity passes through a switchboard which sends to electricity to all of the appliances and electronics in your home. This switchboard helps make sure that your solar energy is the first to be used, and not the electricity from the municipal systems — supporting your energy independence!

Last but not least, there is the bi-directional meter. This meter both tracks all solar energy sent to your house and collects all the excess solar energy that your house doesn't use, sending it back to the grid. Through sending electricity back to the municipal electric system (net-metering), you earn credit on your electricity bill, saving you even more money!

The Benefits of Our Solar Power Systems

Have you been noticing ever-increasing energy bills from the municipal electrical system? Or have you been experiencing loss of power or power spikes and are tired of the unreliability of the municipal electrical system?

Nature Coast Solar can help you reduce or completely eliminate your dependence on the municipal system! By choosing to install solar power panels, you can drastically reduce, or even get rid of, your energy bill by harnessing the sun's energy.

Our systems are entirely customized to your home and your budget — so you can achieve as much energy independence as your budget will provide. Each solar panel system is entirely bespoke to your needs, so you can produce and store however much of your own electricity you want or can afford.

Our systems can even include a backup battery and stand-by generators — just in case the sun doesn't show it's face for a while! These backup batteries and generators will also help you through any municipal power outages you may experience if you are still semi-reliant on that system for some of your power.

Why Florida Trusts Nature Coast Solar — Our History

The company founder, Earl Elwinger, had been working for Solar Water Heaters of New Port Richey in Florida for a number of years. Earl was passionate and curious about how solar hot water systems worked. He had always had a keen interest in opening his own solar company. He finally got his chance in 1979. Factory owner Mr. Ramsey asked him to open his own company, promising to provide him with all the necessary materials.

Back then, solar wasn't very popular. Very few people understood how the systems worked. It would take all the passion, drive and knowledge that Earl had to succeed at a totally new industry in an environment — with limited solar energy available at the time. Earl was joined by his father, Bill, later that year. Together, they vowed to do whatever it took to show the Hudson, Florida community what solar energy was all about — and make a difference.

Sitting under an oak tree on Spring Hill Drive, Earl and Bill discussed solar energy with the locals. They frequently stopped by and looked at the mobile display mounted on a trailer. It was hooked up to a solar hot water panel and a tank. This unit was constantly producing clean, free and efficient hot water. Everyone looked at it in awe.

System after system, with word of mouth spreading around town, Nature Coast Solar began to grow. We expanded across Hernando, Pasco, and Citrus Counties. After so much success, in 1983 the company also expanded into the solar pool heating field. Our product of choice? Heliocol solar collectors.

Although we have evolved so much over the last 40 years, we have never forgotten how our company was founded. It wasn't just the passion and drive from pioneers in the solar industry like Earl and Bill that helped make the company into what it is today. It was the loyalty, support and belief from all of our customers and local people that truly believe in solar.
